Resource Sheet 1 - Healing in the Old Testament
The Old Testament has numerous examples of people being healed or raised from the dead as a result of prayer:
Genesis 20:1-18 - Abimelech, his wife and concubines were all sterile because of Abraham's deception. When Abimilech pleaded with God, Abraham was allowed to pray for their healing and their wombs were opened again.
Numbers 12:1-16 - Miriam became leprous because she and Aaron had spoken against Moses. Aaron asked Moses for forgiveness and Moses cried out to the Lord, "O God, please heal her!" After 7 days exclusion she was restored.
1 Kings 17 - The son of the widow of Zarephath, who fed Elijah during the famine, became ill and died. Elijah prayed, stretched himself over the boy three times, and the boy returned to life.
2 Kings 4:18-37 - A dead child is restored by Elisha's actions.
2 Kings 4:38-41 - A stew with a poisonous plant in it is made edible by Elisha.
2 Kings 13:20-21 - A dead man came to life when he touched Elisha's bones.
2 Kings 20:1-11; Isaiah 38:1-22 - King Hezekiah was mortally ill, and Isaiah said he would die. But Hezekiah pleaded with the Lord and received another 15 years.
2 Chronicles 30:1-20 - When King Hezekiah restored the Feast of Passover, some tribes celebrated it without purifying themselves as was required. Hezekiah prayed and the Lord healed them.
The following are some other verses that speak of healing in the Old Testament:
Exodus 23:2 -26 - "I will take away sickness from among you, none will miscarry or be barren. I will give you a full life span."
Deuteronomy 7:15 - "The Lord will keep you free from every disease."
Deuteronomy 30:20 - "For the Lord is your life."
2 Chronicles 7:14 - "... I...will forgive their sin and heal their land."
Psalm 103:2-3 - "...and heals all your diseases."
Psalm 107:20 - "He sent His word and healed them."
Psalm 147:3 - "He heals the broken-hearted and binds up their wounds."
Proverbs 4:20-22 - "...they are ... health to a man's whole body."
Ezekiel 34:11-16 - "I will bind up the injured and strengthen the weak."
Hosea 14:4 - "I will heal their waywardness"
Malachi 4:2 - "But for you who revere my name the sun of righteousness will rise with healing in its wings."
